Curling Up on a Cold Winter’s Day in Leadville
With the opening ceremony of the Olympic Games in Sochi, Russia just 40 days away, winter sports is on the minds of millions of Americans. And here in Leadville, interest in the sport of curling has been gaining in popularity. If this includes you, then be sure to head over to the Leiter Ice Rink today – Sunday, Jan. 5 – at noon for the “Learn to Curl” sponsored by the Lake County Recreation Department.
This informal class is being spearheaded by Tom Whitman, a local curling aficionado with passion for sharing his love of the game.
In addition, according to Assistant Recreation Director Felicia Roeder, more than $3,000 in curling equipment, from the stones to the brooms, was generously given to the community by a local donor, so you don’t even need your own equipment. The group has been meeting regularly, learning about this medieval sport, often referred to as “Chess on Ice.” You can stay informed on The Cloud City Curling Club at the Recreation Facebook Page.
