Batter Up!

The Lake County Recreation Department has teamed up with the Colorado Rockies to present the 2012 Baseball Skills Challenge on Sunday, June 10 at Leiter Field (behind Pitts Elementary). The FREE competition begins at 1:30 p.m. Pre-registration begins at 1 p.m.

The Rockies Baseball Skills Challenge is a baseball competition that allows youngsters to showcase their talents in batting, throwing, and base running. Scores are based on distance, accuracy, and speed. Participants may participate in rubber/molded cleats or tennis shoes. Children ages 6 to 13 as of Dec. 31, 2012, will compete against other kids in their same age group. Winners of the local competition can continue on to the Regional competition in July and possibly advance to the State Championship held in August at Coors Field. Looking for a local event to take your little princess to? Well, look no further and make some plans for Saturday night – for the entire family! The Historic Tabor Opera House will be presenting the “CINDERELLA” ballet on Saturday, June 9 at 7:30 p.m.

This magical performance of the beloved fairy tale danced to the magnificent score by Prokofiev. This inspired retelling of the classic story is a novel and exciting presentation of the “Cinderella” ballet. Performances are part of the 2012 opening season of the Historic Tabor Opera House in Leadville, Colo.

In the original choreography for the ballet by Director llena Norton, she combines classical and contemporary images to create a magical world where the mean Stepsisters want to be pop stars and the dancing fairies fly through the air lifted by the coachmen. In the beautiful ballroom scene, ballroom dancers perform graceful waltzes, white the Stepsisters cavort around the ballroom to attract the Prince. Instead, Cinderella captivates the Prince, and they perform a romantic duet until the dock strikes twelve. The ballet features a cast of over 30 professional dancers and Ballet Ariel students, with Damara Cedillo as Cinderella and Kevin Burke as the Prince. Lake County Democrats Spring Fling Tonight

Lake County Democrats will host their annual Spring Fling banquet/ auction tonight at 5:30 pm at the Eagles Lodge at 815 Hemlock Street.

Lake County Representative – and Candidate for HD 61 – Millie Hamner addresses the audience at the Lake County Veterans Memorial. Hamner will be the keynote speaker at tonight’s Democratic Spring Fling.

Colorado State Representative Millie Hamner will be the keynote speaker and local Democratic candidates will also speak.

So far, local politics has been pretty low-key. In fact, Lake County politics don’t really heat up – if it does at all – until the fall. Even in a presidential election year.

Regardless, candidates meet and discuss their platforms and what they will change. That’s where social media is so effective. It gives voters that ability to see for themselves and hear for themselves what the candidates have to say.
