Take a Hike . . . and Volunteer This Summer!
Get outdoors this summer and give back. Join Volunteers for Outdoor Colorado (VOC) as they construct new trails and restore others in wilderness areas in and around Leadville and Lake County. The following is a list of VOC programs scheduled for this summer. To learn more about any of these projects or to register go to www.voc.org/projects or call 303-715-1010. Free to participate; no experience necessary.
Continental Divide Trail Construction near Clear Creek Reservoir Volunteers needed for wilderness project – constructing new Continental Divide trail near Leadville. They will be moving the world-renowned Continental Divide Trail away from a busy road to make it safer and more scenic. Register for one of nine project dates: June 14-16, 21-23, 28-30, July 12-14, 26-28, 30-Sep 1, 6-8, 13-15, or 20-22. As the work site is remote, volunteers are asked to sign up for at least two days. Minimum age: 18. Camping provided.
Clinton Reservoir Trail Restoration
Volunteer on August 17-18 at beautiful Clinton Reservoir. This popular trail experiences serious wear and tear, resulting in severe erosion and sediment build-up in the reservoir. Join Volunteers for Outdoor Colorado as they rebuild this popular trail and work to prevent further degradation. Minimum age: 14. Light breakfast and lunch provided.
North Maroon Peak Trail Restoration
Volunteers needed to maintain and restore the North Maroon Peak Trail outside Aspen. Join VOC for an extended weekend backcountry adventure as they work to restore and improve the North Maroon Peak Trail. The state of the trail up this beloved peak, visited by hikers the globe over, is hazardous and positively shameful. Volunteers will restore sections of degraded trail, build trail where only social trails exist, and work to curtail future erosion throughout. Register for one of two project dates—July 18-21 and September 12-15. Minimum age: 14.
Continental Divide Trail Restoration at Tunnel Gulch
Volunteers needed for wilderness project – constructing new Continental Divide trail near Buena Vista. This weekend backcountry adventure from July 20-21. They will reroute part of the world-renowned Continental Divide Trail off of an unsustainable and unnatural logging road. Volunteers will close the logging road, take steps to begin its re-naturalization, and construct new trail. Minimum age: 18. Meals and camping provided.
National Public Lands Day Columbine Trail Construction
Get outdoors and give back on National Public Lands Day! Join Volunteers for Outdoor Colorado as they construct a new trail outside Salida. The local trail system is a community treasure and much-used by visitors to this celebrated summer recreational destination. The new trail will expand recreational access and lessen foot-traffic on some of Salida’s more frequented trails. Join them September 28-29as they build this new trail. Minimum age: 18. Meals and camping provided.
