So it seems like a good time to update readers on the happenings out at Leadville’s Mt. Massive Golf Course (MMGC).

FacebookProfilePictureWhile May’s fickle weather made for a stop-and-start beginning to the golf season, summer has firmly put its foot down and conditions couldn’t be better at America’s Highest Golf Course.

“The remarkable thing about this year is that we’re starting to really grow grass and the course has really come around from the extended spring we had,” said MMGC Manager Craig Stuller when asked about course conditions. “We’re running right into summer conditions. We went straight from winter to summer. I am pretty pleased with the way things are.”

Mt. Massive Golf Course is a nine-hole public course on the outskirts of Leadville. Set in the open spaces of the Arkansas River Valley near the river’s headwaters, surrounded by the tallest mountains in the state, adjacent to ranch land and forest, it has a truly spectacular setting.

Golf has been played on the site since the 1930s, originally on sagebrush fairways and sand greens. In the early 1970s, a $50,000 grant provided the funds for a single-row automated irrigation system. The irrigation system allowed Mt. Massive to establish turf and to begin thinking of itself as a real golf course. Mostly dependent on donations and modest membership revenues, a few caring folks nurtured and tended the course into the late 1980s.

As the tourism-driven regional economy boomed through the 1990’s, MMGC saw a steady increase in daily-fee play and revenue. This led to hiring a full-time superintendent and staff, which led to improved maintenance and operations. The original irrigation system was replaced by a state of the art system in 2001, aiding in conservation efforts and further improving the already excellent turf conditions.

Today, this affordable and friendly course caters to over 20,000 rounds annually. It is conditioned and maintained to a level that rivals the nearby resort courses which carry $100+ per round price tags.

In fact,  today’s Father’s Day Golf Special is an example of that. Where else can you play 9 holes, and have a delicious lunch and drink, all for only $30. It’s also worth noting this season’s social media efforts out at the golf course. In the ever-changing world of marketing, Mt. Massive has jumped on the social media bandwagon and maintains an active Facebook Page (, Twitter account (@MtMassiveGolf)  and You Tube Channel (MtMassiveGolf).

Sounds like a good way to continue to spread the word about what an incredibly special course Mt. Massive is, and not just because it’s America’s Highest!

Happy swinging to all you Dads – have a great day!Social_Media_poster_MMGC
