Local Fishing: Don’t Let Run Off Bring You Down!
Here is the local fishing report for the Upper Arkansas River (Leadville to Buena Vista) brought to you by Tim Hill of Colorado Fly Fishing Guides in historic downtown Leadville.
Flows have spiked and high water conditions exist on the Upper Arkansas River. With this initial surge of run off comes the effects of sluff, scouring and displaced sediment. Clarity is rating poor in the morning while the high elevation melt from the heat of the previous day “pushes” through. Flows subside somewhat and clarity does improve late morning through early evening and rates good as the cooler less turbid water from the previous night comes through. Nymphing is still the main game right now, however well placed attractors near the edge have been turning opportunistic fish.
Big stones, caddis pupa, and san juans will take fish sub surface. Remember to bump up fly sizes and leader/tippet/shot selection for higher sink rates. No defined hatch yet but plenty of caddis activity underneath.
Don’t let run off bring you down! The Upper Arkansas Headwaters maintains fishabe clarity throughout most of run off. Let Colorado Fly Fishing Guides show you effective high water techniques so you can keep your lines tight until the lower elevation rivers clear up!
