Paddle Fest Launched in Twin Lakes By Johnny Canoe
When your name is Johnny Canoe, what else are you going to do, except start Paddle Fest, in Twin Lakes, Colorado no less. So if you’re looking for some high country, alpine lake adventure, head to the first-ever Johnny Canoe Paddle Fest tomorrow, Saturday, July 12, starting at 9 a.m.
While it was a dream-in-the-making for years, Johnny “Canoe” Gwaltney finally filled out enough federal forms necessary, to secure permits, thus making Paddle Fest an official Twin Lakes annual event, to be held every second weekend in July. So a big “high five” paddle on that accomplishment!
For those who may not know, Johnny owns and operates the Twin Lakes Canoe and Kayak Adventures boat rental shop next to the Twin Lake General Store. And while it’s not a huge operation, it’ll certainly meet your needs for rental should you decided to come out to Paddle Fest this Saturday, July 12 to compete and don’t have a rig of your own.
So here’s the rundown – so far – about the first-ever Johnny Canoe Paddle Fest.
Competitors can compete in one of four divisions: three-person canoe, tandem kayak, single kayak and stand-up paddle boarding. Each division will have subcategories such as men, women, mixed and senior.
Things will be stage at the upper lake at the Red Rooster boat ramp parking lot. The race course is a one-mile across and back to Interlaken Resort on Twin Lakes, with timed intervals determining the winners. The Twin Lakes Search and rescue and paramedics will be on hand, but everyone’s hopeful that the first year will not become a training exercise for any of those folks.
So, if you’re into good-natured competition, from beginners to advanced, for men and women, age 21 and up, and you got $50 and a pen, then you can register on Saturday morning. Sounds like they’re some great prizes.
