Youth Outdoor Scholarships for Leadville Students
It’s always nice when things come full circle. And that’s what’s happening with the new-to-Leadville GECKO Race: The Rocky Mountain High-est Marathon. And, it hasn’t even been a month since organizers held the event in Lake County on September 7. For those unfamiliar with GECKO, it stands for Giving Every Child Knowledge of the Outdoors.
According to the Pagosa Springs company’s website, the GECKO premise sounds simple enough. Yet, study after study, shows that children aren’t getting enough outdoor play. And this trend isn’t improving.
Through donations and events, like this latest addition to the Leadville race calendar of events, GECKO is raising money to help children from all walks of life experience outdoor programming through scholarships to the nation’s leading outdoor education providers.
And now Lake County kids have a chance to apply for scholarships for teenagers to attend the nation’s leading outdoor education programs.
Through organizations like National Outdoor Leadership School, High-Mountain Institute, and WildPagosam, GECKO is enabling youth to reconnect with the outdoors through sensory exploration and hands-on experiences. One of the main goals of the program is to foster a deep respect and appreciation for the natural world, and to encourage participants to get “unplugged, off the couch and outside!”
The group is especially looking for applicants from Lake County. Interested parties should contact the GECKO team directly. Contact form is on their website: LINK
