The Annual Ski In at Ski Cooper will have a special addition this February 20 – Third Graders! The students will culminate their special Tenth Mountain Expedition Project by joining Tenth Mountain Division Soldiers for the ski tribute to the soldiers.

Over the past few months, the third grade at Lake County Intermediate School has been engaged in an expedition focused on the 10th Mountain Division. In this expedition, students have built their background knowledge of World War II and the Tenth’s involvement. In addition, students have investigated the impact these men and women have had on our local community. After returning from the war, many of the “ski troopers” were major contributors to today’s thriving local ski industry.

As a culminating event to our expedition, some 10th Mountain Division veterans will be traveling to Leadville, and will be recognized for their achievements during an assembly put on by the third graders at LCIS. In addition, on February 20, students will have the opportunity to take part in the Ski In Ceremony at Ski Cooper, in which students will have a chance to ski with the 10th Mountain Vets. We would love to offer this unique experience to every third grade student, though we know some will be constrained by the cost of the trip.

How You Can Help:

Thanks to our partnership with Ski Cooper, the cost for the trip will only be $25 per child. This includes a lift ticket, rentals, and bus fee. To help make this possible for every student, we are seeking help from the community. We are asking community members to consider “adopting” a third grader by funding one child’s trip.

We also invite you to visit LCIS to see our teaching and learning in action. Thank you for your support.

What is Expeditionary Learning?

As many of you are aware, this year the Lake County School District has begun its implementation of the Expeditionary Learning instructional model in grades Kindergarten through sixth. Part of the Expeditionary Learning, or EL, philosophy is the use of in-depth learning “expeditions” to increase student engagement and provide real-world connections to the material being taught.Obit_Spacer_Thin
