Lizardos Receive Support, More Efforts Underway

In the early morning hours of May 30, a fire broke out at the Mountain View West Trailer Park claiming the life of 10-year-old Marc Lizardo and destroying his family’s home and all of their possessions.

Since then, the Lake County community has shown an out-pouring of support, and established a variety of ways that people can provide assistance and support to the Lizardo family.

The following information was provided to Leadville Today by a representative of the Lizardos concerning the family’s memorial and remembrance plans for Marc.

Monday, June 8 the family will be hosting a potluck gathering at the 6th Street Gym from 4 – 7 p.m. This child-focused gathering will be a celebration of Marc’s life with a family-friendly, festive atmosphere. June 8 would have been Marc’s 11th birthday, so the afternoon will include games and a piñata! Community members are invited. Attendees are asked to bring a dish to share for the potluck. They need help setting up from 2 – 4 p.m. and clean up from 7 – 9 p.m.

Next Thursday, June 11 there will be a vigil for Marc Lizardo at Annunciation Church in Leadville, starting at 7 p.m. This will include prayer and remembrance for Marc and the family. Afterward the family  will be providing sweet bread and atole in the Holy Family Parish Hall located next door.

The next day, Friday, June 12, there will be a memorial Mass at 2 p.m. at Annunciation Church, followed by a small reception in the Parish Hall where the family will be serving sweet bread and atole, a traditional Mexican hot masa-based beverage.

The Lizardo family wanted to express their sincere gratitude of the outpouring of love and support during this time of great loss.

Upcoming Fundraising Events – How You Can Help

When tragedy hits this small town, Leadvillites are quick to jump into action to find ways to help and support in any way that they can. Fire_GoFundMeAnd almost immediately after the fire, a Go Fund Me account – RIP Marc – was established. To date, those efforts have already raised over $11,000 to help the family with Marc’s funeral expenses, as well as replacing all the family’s belongings which were lost to the fire. Last Sunday, a fundraiser at the soccer tournament – Marc’s brother Isaac plays for the Leadville Flame Soccer Team. And yesterday the Lake County Middle School students remembered their fellow classmate Marc Lizardo by hanging homemade prayer flags on the playground fence.

There are also quite a few upcoming events and efforts in place that you can get involved with to help this family.

Thursday and Friday – June 4 & 5 – The Cornerstone Church at 117 E. 6th Street will be accepting items to be donated to the family. Specific items needed, including clothing sizes for the individual family members, can be found HERE.

This Saturday, June 6 there will be a car-wash fundraiser in the north parking lot of the Lake County Courthouse from 12:30 – 5 p.m. A $10 per vehicle donation is being suggested. There will also be baked goods for sale. 

Family Dollar located at 1100 Poplar Street is accepting cash donations for the Lizardo family. 

On Sunday, June 7 from 1-4 p.m. the Healy House, located at 912 Harrison Ave. is sponsoring a fund raiser where you can enjoy tamales and kids can enjoy a bouncy house.

Mtn View West SignThen on Saturday, June 13 a spaghetti dinner will be held at Mountain View West Trailer Park office building at 19773 Highway 24 from 5 – 8 p.m.  There is a suggested donation of $5 per person for dinner. 

The fundraising efforts continue into July, with an event planned at the CrossFit Gym on July 10. A $25 donation will get you into the gym for a workout to benefit the Lizardo family – bring your friends!
