Grab the Pole, Grab The Line, It’s Summertime Fishing!
No more excuses – it’s summer! The high alpine lakes are filling up fast and most are breaching their banks with all the late spring snow and heavy rains. But now it’s blue skies and sunshine and time to get out on the water for some fishing.
Here’s the first fishing report of the season for the Upper Arkansas River (Between Leadville and Buena Vista) brought to you by Tim Hill with Colorado Fly Fishing Guides located in downtown Leadville.
High water conditions still exist, but the flows are decreasing steadily and clarity now rates from good to very good on the upper river. There are also healthy hatches of stones, caddis and yellow sallies. All of these factors are combining to make for some terrific dry fly opportunities with stimulators, caddis, and sally patterns. Add a dropper in the mornings for better action. As the day progresses, and they start taking the dry, snip the dropper off, or add another dry. The fishing is starting to ramp up – time to beat the heat and come enjoy high country in the heart of the Rockies!
