White Mountain Snowmobile Tours Open for Winter
by Brennan Ruegg, Leadville Today Contributor
Not only are the ski resorts opening back up, but so are all the doors into winter recreation in Leadville. Amped up for another season is White Mountain Snowmobile Tours/Top of the Rockies Zipline, offering an experience of the Rocky Mountains unmatched in its style and size. Located just seven miles out of Leadville at 6492 Highway 91, it’s impossible to miss the turnoff; just look for Big Nugget Sky Tower, which also serves as the last run of every tour, a triple-zip into base camp.
Locally owned, and operated for over 25 years as the highest snowmobile tour in Colorado, White Mountain Snowmobile Tours presents a crash-course snowmobile lesson and journey into the wide expanse of public land in the upper Arkansas Valley. The trails include remote parts of San Isabel National Forest and Turquoise Lake, reaching elevations over 11,000 feet. A variety of tours designed for different ages and skill level are offered, from family to performance, to extreme, from groomed trails to backcountry powder-filled bowls.
Or if you’re up for a full day of adventure, add some treetop vistas to the experience. The iconic Top of the Rockies Zipline takes you up, up, up in a snow cat, and then careening down six double-overhead lines descending a total of 1,000 feet at speeds over 25 miles per hour. Catch glimpses of migrating elk or just enjoy the solitude and pristine beauty of the back country. Bring the camera!
Combo snowmobile/zipline tours include lunch, now offering City on a Hill’s hot soups. Discount programs are available, only when booking directly through the White Mountain office. While helmets and other gear are provided, make sure to bring eye protection and dress warm.
