Student Cyclists Rise, Shine at Cloud City Challenge
Leadville Racing High School Mountain Bike Team shined at the Cloud City Challenge, the second race of the Colorado High School Mountain Bike League Series, which was held in Leadville on the Colorado Mountain College campus, last weekend. Over 800 student athletes, along with 2,000 family members and spectators were in town to support the growing high school league of student athletes.
According to Coach Bruce Kelly, all Leadville Racing riders exceeded their previous results with Cain Gipson leading the way with a 6th place finish in the JV boys division. He was followed closely by Bryan Reveles in 10th place.
In the boys’ varsity race, Cheyenne Mendoza just missed a top 10 finishing 11, followed closely by Brandon Hansen in 13th. Matt Koch rebounded from a flat-filled, first race to finish 39 in the very large boys freshman field.
Leadville Racing’s exchange student, Jan Birk, from Germany went from 99th place in the Frisco race to 74th in the boys JV race. Zayden Tufts also made his racing debut last Sunday, Sept. 11 in Leadville, riding to an acceptable 90th place finish in the boys JV race.
Overall the Leadville Racing team moved up from 17th place to 11th in the D-2 division.
“The team continues to train hard,” said Leadville Racing team coach Bruce Kelly who manages the team with his wife Stacy. “They try to continue to improve every race! Also. we would like to thank all the locals who came out and volunteered to help at the races in Leadville last weekend, and cheer our local riders on.”
The next race is Sunday, Sept. 25 at Granby Ranch. While the Leadville Racing Team is comprised of student athletes from Lake County High School, the team is not officially part of the school district’s athletic department and therefore relies solely on outside donations, and contributions of time and resources.
