Political Report: For the House, Hamner v. Schutt
While national election coverage keeps taxing the civic spirit with the latest barrage of leaks, debates, and social media spurs, it’s important to remember that the worst crime one can commit against democracy is to give up in participation. By forfeiting a vote, one may also be forfeiting other rights. The limbs of government stretch even to Leadville, and the smaller the constituency, the bigger the vote.
On September 26, a number of politicians reached out to Leadville at Meet The Candidates Night opening themselves to questions posed by local residents and Leadville Today readers. In the video below, Incumbent District 61 Colorado House Representative Millie Hamner (D) and nominee Bob Schutt (R), introduce themselves and discuss three topics: changes in marijuana legislation, natural resource extraction, and–the year’s most pressing local concern–affordable housing. Schutt is a Vietnam veteran and orthopedic surgeon from Crested Butte. Hamner has been the House District 61 Representative for more than five years and lives in Dillon.
Colorado starts voting when absentee ballots are sent out next Monday, Oct. 17, with Election Day on Tuesday, Nov. 8. Leadville Today will continue with Political Roundup Reports on Wednesdays leading up to election results on Nov. 9.
