Our Lady of Guadalupe Celebrations Underway
This Sunday morning it will be hard to miss the sea of bright red costumes and the steady beat of drums, as the annual Our Lady of Guadalupe procession makes its pilgrimage into historic downtown Leadville. While the 3-day celebration officially begins Friday night, it’s this Sunday’s procession and dancing that capture the attention and admiration of locals and visitors.
Arguably one of the largest, most successful youth celebrations in Leadville, the events commemorate the December 12 feast day of the Blessed Mother of Jesus Christ. This annual event includes hundreds of participants from the Latina community who share their beautiful tradition and special culture. Dozens of youth from the Holy Family Parish in Leadville dress in elaborate beaded and belled costumes and perform tradition, ceremonial dances in honor of Mexico’s Patron Saint, Our Lady of Guadalupe.
While the story of Juan Diego and Our Lady of Guadalupe is religious in nature, the local celebration is deeply immersed in Hispanic culture, from the costumes, to the impressively endless dancing, to the long, lively fiestas! It’s a celebration like none other in Leadville.
All of these events are free and open to the public. Everyone is welcome to come and celebrate Our Lady of Guadalupe and enjoy this very special spiritual and cultural event in Leadville. Here are the details.
- Saturday, Dec. 10 – The celebration begins at 8 p.m. with the coronation of Our Lady of Guadalupe in Lake County’s 6th Street Gym.
- Sunday, Dec. 11 – The pilgrimage group begins their procession from Mountain View Trailer Park located on Highway 24 north at 10 a.m. It’s hard to miss the colorful entourage as the travel in their bright red costumes, keeping in step to the beating of the drum. The procession will follow Highway 24 south into downtown Leadville (at 11a.m.-ish), eventually turning east on 7th Street toward Leadville’s historic Annunciation Church. Mass will follow at Noon with a fiesta in the 6th Street Gym at 1 p.m.
- Monday, Dec. 12 – The celebration will conclude at 5 a.m. on the Feast Day of Our Lady of Guadalupe with Mananitas.
For those interested in seeing this talented and dedicated group of Leadville youth perform traditional dances in honor of Our Lady of Guadalupe, gather in front of Annunciation Church, sometime around 11:30 a.m on Sunday, Dec. 11.
The elaborate procession then files into celebrate a noon Mass which includes a dramatic presentation of the story of San Diego and Our Lady of Guadalupe.
The entire 3-day celebration culminates in a big fiesta in Lake County’s Sixth Street Gym, commencing after Mass, around 1 p.m. on Sunday, Dec. 11. Everyone is welcome!
