Observing Christmas in America’s Highest City!


Christmas Eve is this Saturday, which means Christmas falls on Sunday. For those who plan to open more than gifts, try the doors to any of these Christian establishments who will be holding religious observances for the holiday on Saturday and Sunday and who welcome everyone looking for company or spiritual encouragement.

Christmas Eve Services:

Cornerstone Church at 117 E. 6th St. (across from 6th St. Gym). – 4 p.m. & 6 p.m. services in both Leadville and Buena Vista.

First Baptist Church at 219 Mountain View Drive – 6:30 p.m.

St. George Episcopal Church located at 200 W. 4th St. – 3 p.m. community meal, 7 p.m. Candlelight Service.

First Presbyterian Church at W. 3rd & McWethy Drive – 7 p.m. Christmas Eve Candlelight Communion.

Good Shepherd Lutheran at W. 8th & James St. – 6:30 p.m. Christmas Eve Divine Service.

Annunciation Catholic Church – 9 a.m. Mass (English), 12 p.m. Mass (Spanish).

Community Church of Leadville – 10 a.m. Worship

First Presbyterian Church– 9 a.m. worship.

Please note that while Hanukkah begins at sunset on December 24, no local services will be offered as the Temple Isreal in Leadville operates more as a musuem than synagague. A Happy Festival of Lights to all! 

What’s Open on Christmas Day?

What about Leadville’s business establishments? Many will be open this weekend including the best places to ski, grab a sweet or a nightcap.

Ski Cooper, a few miles north of Leadville on Hwy 24 will be hosting a Christmas Eve celebration. Santa will be skiing and available to meet with kids from 9 a.m. and a Christmas Trio will entertain in the lodge from 1 p.m. – the Base Camp Grill and Katie O’Rourke’s Irish Pub are both open on Christmas Day until 4 p.m.

Cookies With Altitude located at 717 Harrison Ave. will be open on Saturday Dec. 24 from 5 a.m. to 5 p.m. and on Sunday from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m.

Periodic Brewing at 115 E 7th St. is celebrating on Saturday. Wear a Christmas sweater into the brewery and get $1 off the first pint or growler refill. The brewery will be closed on Christmas Day.15626195_1357122027665352_7473561219875907503_o

The Pastime Bar & Cafe at 120 W. 2nd St. will be open on Christmas Eve for regular business hours serving burgers and beer from noon until the bar closes. The Pastime will be closed on Christmas Day.

Safeway will be open and no doubt busy on Saturday from 6 a.m. to 11 p.m. and on Christmas Day from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m.

Be safe getting out and about because meteorologists call for a white Christmas. Many blessings!
