Yes, the Nordic Sprints are happening, according to organizer Karl Remsen, with Leadville Nordic. Competitors in the Knock-Out Nordic Sprints will gather under the Harrison Avenue lights on Friday, March 3 at 7 p.m. to kick off the big winter celebration. Participants race the main drag with great Nordic spirit, marking for many, the last race of the season. The competition has a double elimination with two skiers starting, and the fastest racer advancing to the next round of competition. $3 Entry. Prizes, Excitement, Spills. Registration at 8th & Harrison Avenue in downtown Leadville.
If you’re looking to get in a little fitness before taking in the ski joring action, then consider lining up at the start line of the Tennessee Pass Cookhouse 5k/10k Saturday, March 4 at 10 a.m. This is the fifth and final event in the 2017 Pedal Power Winter Race Series. Each year, proceeds from the series go to support Lake and Eagle County charities. Proceeds from this event will go to support scholarships to be awarded to high school mountain bike racers as the continue on to college.
The Leadville Winter Mountain Bikes Series continues this Saturday, March 4 at 6 p.m. with the Mineral Belt Mayhem, an 11 mile loop on Leadville’s beautiful Mineral Belt Trail . . . at night! The race begins and ends in front of Cycles of Life, 309 Harrison Ave in downtown Leadville, start time is 6 p.m.
The Cloud City Wheelers, who host the entire Leadville Winter Mountain Bike Race Series, advocate that winter racing is a great way to keep up riding and racing during the off-season. The Cloud City Wheelers are a Leadville club dedicated to providing bicycle activities to promote individual health and recreation. The final competition in the Leadville Winter Mountain Bike Race Series will be back on home turf with the East Side Epic on April 15.
Leadville Nordic Paintball Biathlon will take place on Sunday, March 5.
What is it, you ask? Take cross country skiing and throw in some paintball guns; it’s really that simple.
For each race (Kids 1 km, 5 km, or 10 km) you ski three laps. After the first lap, you shoot 5 shots prone (lying down). After your second lap, you shoot 5 shots standing. Then you ski your third lap as hard as you can. If you make a shot, seconds will be deducted from your overall ski time. The fastest skier at the end wins.
Race day registration is from 9 – 10:30 a.m. at the Tennessee Pass Nordic Center. The goal of this event is to help skiers have fun, be outside, and raise a little money. Expect more smiles than spandex and more excitement than electronic timing chips. For more information please call the Nordic Center at 719-486-1750 or connect at www.leadvillenordic.org.
