“Music In the Schools” Performance on Friday


Perhaps you’ll hear them warming up their vocal cords this Friday, Apr. 6 in the Lake County High School (LCHS) Auditorium. Or maybe you’ll hear your favorite LCHS student humming a little different tune after the upcoming educational workshops for LCHS choir students. But no doubt that music lovers will be glad to hear them hitting that high note as The Breckenridge Music Festival’s “Music in the Schools” Program and Central City Opera bring an evening performance of En Mis Palabras / In My Own Words to Leadville this Friday, April 6.

Breckenridge Music Festival’s “Music in the Schools” Program will be hitting a high note in Leadville this week!

The public is invited to follow the story of Ana Maria, a young Mexican girl torn between her family’s culture and American society.  It is a powerful story about finding your own voice as the audience follow Ana Maria’s struggle to find her true self.

Friday evening’s bi-lingual opera performance, in Spanish and English will follow educational vocal workshops at Lake County High School with the choir students. While in Leadville, vocal artists of Central City Opera’s Bonfils-Stanton Foundation Artists Training Program will lead educational workshops for choir students at Lake County High School.

Founded in 1932, Central City Opera is the fifth oldest professional opera company in the country and is renowned for its exquisite world-class productions, competitive and robust young artist-training program, and creative educational and community engagement activities.

The Breckenridge Music Festival’s “Music in the Schools” Program serves between 3,000 to 4,000 students annually in Summit, Lake (Leadville) and Park (Fairplay) counties presenting classical, traditional and cross-cultural musical arts experiences that include performances, workshops and residencies to enhance the musical arts curriculum in the schools. 

Central City Opera copyThrough this musical arts enrichment program, BMF works to support arts education as a critical component of educational excellence for students from pre-K through grade 12.  The “Music in the Schools” programs are funded thanks to grants from The Summit Foundation and Climax-Molybdenum.  “Music in the Schools” coordinators worked with Central City Opera to present the in-school workshop for Lake County High School choir students as well as the evening public performance of En Mis Palabras.

Groovespeak Headlines Ski Cooper’s Closing Party

Of course, the big blow-out live music news will be happening out at Ski Cooer as they close out the 2017/18 season with their final day outdoor jam session featuring Leadville favorite: Groovespeak. Join frontman Carey Nall and the gang as they will be performing for Cooper’s closing party from 2 – 5 p.m. on the deck at the lodge weather permitting. Beach wear encouraged! Skiers and boarders can also Apres Ski on Saturday, April 7 with Todd Johnson from 3 – 5 p.m. at Katie O’Rourke’s Pub in the Lodge.

Alpine Orchestra Kicks off Spring Series in Leadville

In other music news, if you can’t make this weekend’s lineup, consider the next. On Friday-the-13th the Alpine Orchestra will be making The Magic City feel extra lucky as they kick off their Spring Concert series in Leadville at the Old Church. Concerts are free but donations are accepted and greatly appreciated and are tax deductible.

The theme is BRAHMISSIMO! The orchestra will perform some of the great works by Johannes Brahms, including Academic Festival Overture, Lullaby, Hungarian Dance #6, Variations on a theme by Haydn, and more! Join Orchestra Conductor Beth Steele and The Alpine Orchestra Spring 2018 concerts as follows:

  • Salida on Saturday, April 14, 7:30 p.m. @ The Steamplant, Sacket and G Street
