Weston Pass Hut Seeing Major Success
In its fourth year of operation, Weston Pass Hut is growing into an important Lake County destination and recently won Runner Up in a contest hosted by Hipcamp, a premier online camping guide, and reservation platform. A small group of Lake County residents built Weston Pass Hut on a shoestring budget over seven years.
Located at the top of Weston Pass, the hut is the highest commercial hut in Colorado and one of the highest in North America. The hut has a sod roof and is built into the hillside, which provides an eco-friendly design that takes advantage of natural insulation. Most of the lumber in the hut was sustainably harvested or repurposed.
Although the hut is a relatively new member of Colorado’s hut systems, the number of guests visiting the hut has doubled every year of operation. Now it has won second-place in Hipcamp’s Best of Colorado contest, besting 163 other properties and being outshined only by a property that’s been in business for over a century.
“When I got involved in this project, there were many moments that I doubted my sanity,” joked one of the Weston Pass Hut’s owners, Harry Camp. “Harold Tuxhorn had a vision of creating a warm and welcoming structure in one of the harshest locations in our county. When you’re there in the winter, it feels like you’re in a space station on Mars.”
“We had many challenges with building such a large structure off-the-grid and at this location,” recalled another owner, Kim-Lee Tuxhorn. “The building season is short, the location is isolated, and we were building the hut with make make-shift machines. We even milled our own beams from trees in Lake County. I’m proud of the work we completed and experiences that we can now provide for our guests.”
Ed Camp, another owner who manages the bookings, reported, “We are seeing many people use the hut for all sorts of events and adventures. Of course, we have a core of backcountry skiers in the winter. But the hut is becoming increasingly popular with ultra-marathon runners, hunters, and out-of-state travelers. We have even hosted a wedding, and the location and design of our hut are making it a popular destination for group retreats.”
Ed said that he is proud to have finished as runner-up in a contest with so many Colorado properties. “Hipcamp is providing a great service for everyone who wants to get outdoors. It has connected us with many people who wouldn’t have otherwise known about the hut. We’re happy to be providing some of the best experiences on the platform.”
