Children at Play!
June 18 – Summertime can be a challenge for parents searching for something fun and worthwhile for kids to do. Fortunately, this summer there seems to be a resurgence of great programs for Leadville kids. Leadville Today first reported on some of these programs earlier this month. The following are some additional programs people have sent along since then! Happy Summer!
Fire On The Mountain – Kids Camp Starts TODAY!
Kids Art Camp starts today, Monday, June 18. This program is for children ages 5 -14 years and will involve a number of art projects. The camp will run Mondays, Tuesdays, and Wednesdays from 10 a.m. – 12 noon. You can also drop-in. There will be different themes every week. CLICK to see larger image of the flyer.
The Mount Massive Golf Course is providing Kids’ Golf Clinic this summer and the next one is June 26-28 . It’s just $25 per session, and participants that graduate get the use of free clubs and golf privileges for the rest of the season. Call 719-486-2176 for more details.
Calling All Dreamers!
Studies have shown that voluntary reading is the best way to start good reading habits in children. Children can get started on their good reading habits by attending the Summer Reading Program and choose their own books from a wide variety available in the Children’s Department. And the Lake County Public Library has a great Summer Reading Program lined up.
“Dream Big – Read!” is this summer’s theme of this local program taught by Robin Deister and Jeff Harlow. Readers of all ages are welcome. Sign up on Tuesday, June 19 or the first day you attend. Children will explore night-time themes through activities, stories, crafts, music, dance, and Readopoly. Maybe they will learn how to be a bat, tell tales around a campfire, see what happens when stuffed animals have a sleepover in the library, learn about space and constellations, what it is like underground, make monsters, and dream about the future.
The program always ends with the children being in the Summer Reading Program float in the Boom Days Parade on August 4. This year’s theme will be aliens on the moon.
The Summer Reading Program is open to young people preschool to 5th grade. Prizes, provided by local merchants, are awarded for reading. Sessions are designed for children based on the grade they were in school last year. Preschool children may come Tuesday, Wednesday or Thursday mornings from 9:30 a.m. to 11 a.m. Children who finished kindergarten or 1st grade last year may come on Thursday afternoon from 1 p.m. to 3 p.m. Children who finished 2nd grade to 5th grade may come Tuesday or Wednesday afternoons from 1 p.m. to 3 p.m. This year, thanks to the generosity of Friends of Lake County Public Library, we are able to take 50 children to the Gates Planetarium on July 14 as part of the program.
Prizes, provided by local merchants, are awarded for reading hours. The Top Reader Prizes include $5.00 Gift Certificates to Kum-N-Go #916 and an Ultimate Top Reader Prize from the Book Mine.
All activities are free and open to the public on a drop-in basis. For more information, call the Lake County Public Library at 719-486-0569.
