A serious multiple vehicle crash forced the closure of Highway 91 in both directions on Tuesday afternoon. The crash followed a series of collisions involving multiple drivers amid winter storm conditions.
The incident occurred shortly after 3:00 p.m. on Highway 91, just a few miles south of Copper Mountain. According to the Colorado State Patrol (CSP), the crash involved up to seven vehicles. The exact number of injuries remains unconfirmed, but several individuals were transported to area hospitals for medical treatment.
Emergency response crews, including CSP troopers and the Colorado Department of Transportation (CDOT), were immediately dispatched. Tow trucks were also called in to assist in clearing the wreckage. CDOT teams worked to address hazardous road conditions as a winter storm system moved through the region, contributing to dangerously slick roads and poor visibility.
The crash resulted in the complete closure of Highway 91 between Copper Mountain and Leadville, creating travel disruptions for several hours. By approximately 5:30 p.m., CSP confirmed the highway had been reopened to traffic after the roadway was cleared and conditions were stabilized.
CSP is leading the ongoing investigation into the cause of the crash. Preliminary reports suggest icy roads and limited visibility due to snow squalls played a significant role in the chain of collisions.
The incident occurred during a broader wave of winter weather impacting Colorado’s mountain communities. In addition to the Highway 91 crash, westbound lanes of Interstate 70 were closed at Georgetown due to multiple crashes and near whiteout conditions. The Clear Creek County Sheriff’s Office reported at least four crashes along I-70 between mile markers 221 and 216.
A Winter Weather Advisory issued by the National Weather Service (NWS) was in effect across Summit, Grand, and Clear Creek counties through 5:00 p.m. on Tuesday. Forecasters predicted an additional 1 to 5 inches of snow into the evening hours and noted the advisory could be extended depending on overnight conditions.
According to the NWS, skies were expected to begin clearing Tuesday night, with calmer conditions anticipated for Wednesday. Some cloud buildup is expected by late Wednesday afternoon ahead of another storm system.
Authorities continue to urge caution for all motorists traveling through high-elevation areas during winter weather events. Drivers are advised to monitor road conditions, allow extra travel time, and ensure their vehicles are equipped for snow and ice.
No fatalities have been reported as of this publication. CSP will provide further updates as the investigation develops.
