Ski Joring Gallops Back to Harrison Avenue

After a one-year detour, Leadville’s iconic Ski Joring competition is charging down Harrison Avenue once again. Event organizer Duffy Counsell announced that on March 5–6, 2022, horses, riders, and skiers will reclaim the town’s historic main street for the 74th running of this time-honored tradition.

Originally sidelined by COVID-19 restrictions in 2021, the race was held off-site on McWethy Drive. Thanks to collaborations with Lake County Public Works and a dedicated volunteer corps, organizers successfully kept the streak alive. Yet nothing matches the excitement and economic boost of the crowds flocking to downtown shops and restaurants—a key reason this year’s theme is “Harrison or Bust!”

Leadville Ski Joring in the Spotlight at DIA

Not only is the event returning home; it’s also on display at Denver International Airport. Travelers passing through the Jeppesen Terminal can visit the “Colorado Winter Festivals” exhibit near Gate A’s security bridge to learn about Ski Joring alongside other celebrated seasonal gatherings. The showcase—sponsored by DEN Arts—features festival artifacts, competition gear, and stunning photographs set against Colorado’s highest peaks.

Twin Lakes Ice Fishing Derby Seeks Successors

Since 1998, the Twin Lakes Ice Fishing Derby has drawn anglers and winter tourists to the quiet mountain corridor. But this year, longtime hosts Angelina Salazar and Danny Gurule have stepped aside, leaving the Leadville Rod and Gun Club in search of new leadership.

The derby’s Forest Service permit runs through 2022, and a strong volunteer base remains in place. Interested individuals or groups willing to coordinate permits, prizes, and day-of operations should contact Chris Carry at the Leadville Rod and Gun Club: 970-406-0129.

Leadville Loppet Confirmed for February 19

Cross-country skiers, mark your calendars: the Leadville Loppet will take place on Saturday, February 19, 2022. The Mineral Belt Committee confirmed the race’s classic and freestyle divisions will again utilize the scenic railroad-grade trails and rolling terrain of the Mineral Belt Trail. Organizers are finalizing a start location—either Dutch Henry or the college soccer field—and working to widen paths to accommodate new grooming equipment. Due to ongoing health precautions, there will be no awards ceremony or post-race gathering this year.

Stay tuned to Leadville Today for further updates on these events and more. Whether you’re a spectator, participant, or volunteer, there’s plenty of opportunity to engage with the community—and to help make Leadville’s winter season one of its best yet.
