Spring’s arrival on historic Harrison Avenue isn’t limited to wildflowers—it’s also in full bloom in our local business scene. Here’s the latest from Leadville Today’s headlines:

Delaware Hotel Completes Ownership Transfer

After months of rumor and anticipation, the iconic Delaware Hotel officially changed hands on June 24, 2021. Dating back to 1886, John Callaway built this storied lodging at 7th and Harrison as an homage to his native state. Now, local entrepreneur David Chrisman—joined by partners Alex Haler, Monty Moran, and others—has outlined a three-phase investment plan to refresh the property without losing its Victorian character:

  1. Phase One: Food & Beverage Renovation

    • Lobby Bar Revival: Removing the retail fixtures from the 1990s overhaul to restore an open cocktail lounge, complete with stage for live music and a grand piano.

    • Interior Update: Introducing richer blue-green tones and maximizing natural light in the newly configured seating areas.

  2. Phase Two: Street-Level Refresh

    • Transforming the former retail storefront into a chic coffee shop and ice-cream parlor—perhaps reviving the fondly remembered “Pinecones” spot.

  3. Phase Three: Guest Room Enhancements

    • Reconfiguring certain double suites into four additional guest rooms (boosting the total from 36 to 40).

    • Upgrading the corner suite into a premium offering.

Chrisman hinted that the hotel’s bar and restaurant spaces will reopen by year’s end, pending final approvals and construction schedules. We’ll keep you posted as each phase unfolds.

Casa Blanca Property Purchased—Restaurant Remains in Family Hands

In a move that delighted downtown neighbors, Mick Lindquist acquired 118 E. 2nd Street this summer—encompassing both the Casa Blanca Restaurant building and its adjacent residence. The sale safeguards Donny Mascarenaz’s family-run Mexican eatery (still owned and operated by the Mascarenaz family) and provides Lindquist a convenient home across from his Timberline Motel on Harrison Avenue. Restaurant service continues uninterrupted under its beloved recipes and staff, while Lindquist prepares to move his own family into the freshly purchased house next door.

Leadville Liquors Welcomes New Owners

Change is afoot at Leadville Liquors on Polar Street, too. After 25 years at the helm, Deann Skala has sold the business to local couple Chris and Tamsey Tufte as of June 17, 2021. The Tuftes—parents to five and well-known in town through Tamsey’s work with the school district and thrift shop—plan to continue serving cold beer, fine wine, and top-shelf spirits in both the drive-thru and walk-in store. Stop by, say hello, and share your favorite new brands to stock on their shelves!

From the storied corner of 7th and Harrison to the beloved Casa Blanca “white house” and our neighborhood liquor store, Leadville’s small-town spirit thrives with each new chapter. Congratulations to all the new owners—and here’s to many more years of local success!
